Bonaire Scuba Resort Puts Out a BOUNTY on Lionfish
The lionfish invasion of the Caribbean continues. One prominent scuba diving resort on the island of Bonaire, Captain Don's Habitat, is working hard to do something about the growing lionfish problem. From March 6-13, Captain Don's Habitat is hosting the first "Lionfish Wrangler" event. Scuba divers can actually earn a "bounty" every time they spot a lionfish during this weeklong event.

Cold temperatures causing coral bleaching in South Florida and the Keys
Sustained cold water temperatures in South Florida and the Florida Keys triggered severe coral bleaching and even coral death, alerting resource managers and prompting a coordinated assessment response from the science community. Temperatures in some nearshore areas of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary dropped to 52 degrees Fahrenheit for several days — well below average for this time of year — with fatal results for some corals.View post:

Key California Assembly Bill clears the way for more artificial reefs
The ability to bring more of California’s coastline to life with the creation of artificial reefs passed a critical hurdle Tuesday when the State Assembly Committee on Judiciary unanimously approved AB 634. The bill will now be sent to the Assembly floor, where it could be voted on as early as January 18, 2010.

Cozumel Lionfish Tournament with Blue Magic Scuba
Since mid-summer, lionfish seem to have proliferated on Cozumel's reefs, and Blue Magic Scuba, a local Cozumel dive center, has decided to do something about it. The idea is to help control the lionfish invasion, something that threatens to decimate other marine life.
