A little known fact is that apart from being located in a nice and warm region, Florida has the longest coastline of all the states in the U.S.

When we first look at the Atlantic coastline you will find a series of reef lines creating an outer reef, inner reef and middle reef. These reefs run along the coastline providing different diving experiences from north of West Palm Beach all the way down the coastline to The Keys. A fantastic event up and down this coast is the perpetual current of warm water which is The Gulf Stream. The Gulf Stream runs near to the shores heading north before veering out into the Atlantic. The Gulf Stream provides a cleansing action for the marine bio system and brings with it nutrients which provides essential food for the growing marine system.

Florida diving centers are able to find a variety of dive sites along the coast.

Florida Diving Sites: West Palm Beach - Miami

West Palm Beach has a fantastic variety of dive sites with loads of wrecks to explore such as the Thozina which is just one of three ships making up one dive site known as Governor's River Walk Reef.

In West Palm Beach Florida diving beginners can still enjoy a pulsating experience scuba diving well known reef systems such as Breakers Reef.

Travel south down the coast and you find Ft. Lauderdale. Known as "The Venice of America" this is a wonderful place to visit on any Florida diving trip.

Apart from the canals and waterways Ft. Laud offers extraordinary diving opportunities such as Tenneco Towers or Oil Platforms. Venture further south and you arrive at Miami.

Miami. Culture, fashion, sport and 'er' Army tanks waiting to be explored on the sea floor!

Apart from all the cultural things you can do around Miami on your Florida diving trip there is also a great variety of scuba dive sites that provide novice and experienced divers plenty of chance to have fun.

Florida Diving Sites: Key Largo - Key West

Beyond Miami and travelling further south, no Florida diving schedule would exclude a visit to Key Largo or Key West.

When you catch sight of the vast choice of diving sites available it's easy to see why Key Largo is one of the most popular diving destinations in the world.

The locale around Key Largo is amazing in its diversity with shipwrecks, reefs and caves to be explored. The biggest wreck ever sunk off the coast of Florida is the Spiegel Grove and this challenging dive is rewarded with the astonishing sight of one huge shipwreck now occupied by some very great fish. The are many other ships including the U.S.S. Duane and U.S.S. Bibb which can be dived by less experienced divers.

When it comes to underwater photography or macro photography Molasses Reef provides an interesting opportunity to perform your underwater skills with the shallow waters and amazing marine life providing the fantastic colors and lighting.

Key Largo is the finest known by the Florida diving community for its wide choice of diving sites but Key West is the location to go for the nightlife and culture if you do travel to The Keys.

Key West provides some of the best entertainment in The Keys with the streets full of jugglers, singers and other entertainers going through their routines in the street. With some great dive sites Key West is many peoples favorite destination.

So many places and so little time and what's more we haven't even looked at The Gulf of Mexico on Florida's west coast. That we will do in an additional article.

Written by Stephen H Brown you can find more on Florida diving sites at this Florida scuba diving website.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Stephen_Harold_Brown
http://EzineArticles.com/?Great-Florida-Diving-Sites-Along-the-Atlantic-Coast&id=3526544

Related posts:

Vandenberg sinking creates large increase in Florida SCUBA Diving Visitors

What Makes Scuba Diving So Great?

Florida Keys Officials Address Oil Spill Questions

Scuba Diving on Kauai

Articles

Travel

Scuba Diving

If you are looking for a great scuba diving experience, we recommend that you to go to Kauai and enjoy the warms waters of this island. A Colorado scuba dving vacation is not as far-fetched as you might think. For those who are "hard core" about their scuba diving, Colorado lakes and rivers are just as good as anyplace in the world.

The Town That Drowned

One of the more interesting destinations for a Colorado scba diving vacation is Horsetooth Reservoir southwest of Fort Collins. In 1946, the federal Bureau of Reclamation chose the site of the town of Stout, located along the La Poudre River. By 1949, the dam was completed and Stout, which had been established only seventy years earlier as a camp for stone quarry workers, had to be abandoned. The remains of the town are still under water at the lake's southern end; with proper training and dive equipment, Colorado scuba divers can enjoy a fine adventure.

Historic Mining

After outfitting at their local Colorado diving gear supplier, scuba diers may wish to head for the high country to the historic mining community of Leadville, where scenic Turquoise Lake is right nearby. The lake offers some excellent opportunities for exploration through scuba diving; Colorado's mining industry was the heart and soul of the state's economy for decades. Given the nearby town's historical significance, who knows what interesting artifacts one might encounter on a Colorado scuba diving vacation?

Getting Your Dive Equipment

Colorado has its fair share of stores that sell proper equipment, staffed by experienced personnel who also offer certification courses. Colorado diving gear suppliers can also give you insight as to where in the state to go. If you have the time and money to go further afield, however, the fine folks at Colorado diving gear supply stores can also arrange scuba diving vacations to other, more exotic destinations as well.

In any event, you will need to be certified before you go scuba diving. Colorado requirements are just as stringent as other places in the U.S., and this of course is for your own safety; you'll need to know about the normal hazards, safety practices and how to properly use and care for dive equipment. Colorado instructors can take you through this process and help you get ready for scuba diving colorado style.

Wayne Hemrick writes about--Scuba Diving, in Colorado

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Wayne_Hemrick
http://EzineArticles.com/?Scuba-Diving,-Colorado-Style&id=3087313

Related posts:

Buying the Right Scuba Gear For Your Diving Experiences

Scuba Diving Gear – Your Life Depends on It

Scuba Diving Safety and the Importance of a Diving Buddy

Diving – A Start Up

Articles

Diving

diving suit

Do's n Don'ts

ocean floor

Dolphins with a smirk on their faces glide alongside your boat & when you see them you know why they are called the Mona Lisas of the ocean. They have an enigmatic smile plastered on their faces perpetually! Diving is a transcendental experience. The silence & the colors of the deep beckon you as you sink down at a speed determined by the pressure you can feel in your ears. You are hit by the vastness & the shadows of the ocean as you begin your descent...you finally realize what it means to be completely alone yet serene!

Although the sport appears to be risky & adventurous, only the diver can harm himself underwater. Due to ignorance & being in a hurry. Before you don your diving suit & air-tank, you check your basics to see everything is functioning as required. You are made aware of life underwater, the personality (poisonous, angry ones.), & appearances of the objects you will encounter underwater. The Sea Cucumber, though a pretty black & orange in color is poisonous, so no one touches it. But on the ocean floor, a lot of us divers play football w/ it, when there is a lull in activity. Sharks though maligned by the film JAWS never accost you, infact they keep so much distance that you end up chasing them to get a closer look!

The leftovers from your lunch (fish bones, chicken pieces) go into the doggy bag around your waist. When you are down below you use these to attract schools of fish to shimmer around you as you frolic with them. Or the bones are held out to coax the fearsome but shy More Eel to come out from behind the coral rocks. The scorpion fish is a strict no-no. Looks like a colored rock & if you stamp on it, it stings you a shaft of poison.

It is required of every diver that he educates himself about life underwater...so he can enjoy & be cautious too. The only time divers are vulnerable is during the descent & ascent in the ocean. Since there is difference in pressure as you begin going down, you sense out your speed depending on the reaction of your eardrums.

Once you reach the ocean floor (which is at 15-20 Mts. for beginners) the instructor tests you. He may close the valve to your breathing apparatus, pull off your mask or give you signals to see your competence in a tough situation. When the mask is pulled out water rushes into your eyes, but if you are calm you can find your mask, pick it up & wear it again. All this at a depth of 10-15 Mts.! If you panic and start shooting up, or stop breathing you are never certified as a diver. Besides being brave one learns never to panic underwater. You are also taught how to help your partner (one always dives in pairs, never alone) incase she is having a problem or she signals for help.

There are times when one has had to abort a dive ...while the rest of the pack continues descent, which is a heart-breaking situation for any diver. You go up & wait in the boat & fry in the Sun till the divers come back o tell all the gorgeous things the saw down below! Because only today they saw a Shark or Stingrays or a Turtle!

You have the Oriental Sweet lips (w/ lips like Mick Jagger's), Napoleon Wrasses, Parrotfish, Lionfish, and Clown Triggerfish & Pillow Starfish who abound the coral Reefs. When you come back up you can see the sun filtering down to you, a beacon on the surface.

Diving is a lifetime experience. The beauty is preserved diligently by each diver, who never litters the ocean & picks up debris, which is non-bio degradable, bringing it to the surface to be taken back in the boat. The bonding between divers world over is deep because they consider their sport as sacred!

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Bina_Bakshi
http://EzineArticles.com/?Diving---A-Start-Up&id=3073288

Related posts:

Scuba Diving in the Maldives – Thila's, Atolls and So Much More!

Scuba Diving in North Sulawesi – The Natural Wonders of Bunaken and Lembeh Strait

Enjoy Scuba Diving

Catalina Island Scuba Diving

Articles

Catalina diving offers excellent diving opportunities year around. The following is a snapshot of what you may expect when diving Catalina island in all 4 seasons.

January - March: Expect the water to be the coldest of the year, between 54 to 62 degrees, but you can also expect the best visibility of around 50 feet and sometimes much more. The kelp thrives in colder water so the kelp forest will be lush thick and healthy. This time of year you can look for migrating grey whales, jelly fish, white sea bass and plenty of the usual customers; sheepshead, kelp bass and Garibaldi. Winter is my favorite time for night diving as schools of squid come near shore to mate and lay eggs. The scavengers are out in full force so expect to find an abundance of lobster, torpedo rays, angel sharks, horn sharks, sheep crab and much more. Night time turns every dive site into a sea life wonder land.

April - June: The water starts to warm up to an average of 62 to 68 degrees. This time of year we start to see the bat rays out foraging in the sandy sea floor and the pelagic fish are starting to come around to hunt as the large schools of bait fish gather near shore.

July - September: Make your reservations early because this is the best season for diving Catalina Island as an almost warm water destination. Water Temperatures range from around 68 to 75 degrees and visibility from 20 to 30 feet with quantities of sea life that you would think is only possible to be seen in an aquarium or on one of those nature shows on T.V. This is the time of year to see Giant Black sea bass, huge schools of bait fish, yellow tail, bonito, leopard sharks, soup fin sharks and many other warmer water fish to many to mention.

October - December: As the summer high tourist season ends, the crowds are smaller and the town is a little more quiet but the diving is as spectacular as ever. The water is starting to cool down but with a good wetsuit it is still comfortable at 65 - 70 degrees and the visibility is improving to 30 to 40 feet and sometimes much better. The kelp forest is still teeming with life and there is still a chance to see the giant black sea bass and leopard sharks and some of our other summertime visitors along with plenty of the kelp forest locals that we all love to see year around. The Autumn season also marks the beginning of Lobster hunting season when many hungry scuba divers come around to try to catch these delicious but elusive crustaceans.

So, you may need to switch from a 7mm wetsuit to a 3mm wetsuit as the seasons change but one thing does not change; Catalina Island diving is among the best diving in the world every month of the year and if you have not tried it, you are missing out. Make your plans to visit Catalinia Island soon and experience giant kelp forest diving at its best.

Tim Sanchez is a scuba instructor and former resident of Avalon, Catalina Island. A diving expedition to Lighthouse Reef starts from its northern shores, where the Sandbore Caye and Northern Two Cayes greet you at this gateway. Most of these Cayes have an internal lagoon, which also acts as a giant natural cooler.

For divers, the real action is in and around the "diving jewel" known as Long Caye, which is at southernmost tip of the Lighthouse Reef Atoll. Most divers travel by boat 2.5 hours in each direction, to and from Ambergis Caye to Long Caye - which is surrounded by eight of the finest diving sites in Belize....and perhaps even the Hemisphere. Long Caye is slowly becoming the most sought after diving destination in the Caribbean - leading to an unprecedented rush to get a piece of this Belize Real Estate.

It makes sense to have a modest beach house on Long Caye - particularly for seasoned divers who make frequent trips to and from Long Caye.

And, if you love the red footed booby bird, then you have Half Moon Caye, a natural monument of the Government of Belize awaiting you just less than three mile due east of Long Caye.

From Cayes to Diving Holes...

Black Corals, Orange Sponges, Frigates, White Pelican - It cannot get better than these, and particularly if you are a diver. One could not have asked for a better deal from Mother Nature - Almost 40 of the most untouched diving spots in the world...adorned and naturally manicured with 20 foot stalactites, coral reefs, mangroves and sublime internal lagoons. It's no wonder that the Real Estate in Belize is lapped up by the nature lovers from around the world. So, let's meander around some of the most famous diving spots in Belize and Lighthouse Reef Atoll...

The Great Blue Hole...

The Great Blue is 1,000 feet across 400 feet deep and the coral is visible right from the top. It is not only visited by diving aficionados but also by fish of every variety. And if you did not know, the Great Blue Hole is the largest ocean sinkhole in the world - large enough to be visible from outer space. This marine treasure boasts of red algae, hydroids and gorgonians cover most of the corals. You may also find sharing brush, mermaid's fan algae, elkhorm, club finger, shallow-water starlet corals, giant green anemones and various urchins.

Half Moon Caye and Wall...

At the southeast corner of the atoll, nature opens its full panorama for mankind - A densely populated bird sanctuary to the west and coconut palms to the east. If you are an ornithologist, this might tickle your curiosity - 98 recorded species of birds including frigate, red footed booby birds, pelicans, ospreys, egrets, gulls, storks, terns - just to name a few. And to top it all, you have a treetop bird watching platform...Can it get better than this?

The Wall is located south of Half Moon Caye. Divers can experience a depth of 30 feet and a visibility of 100 feet. The nature's aquarium at Half Moon contains garden eels, conch, rays, flounder, star-eye hermit crab, tilefish, manta rays, groupers, yellowtail snappers, razorfish, toadfish, spotted eagle rays, turtles and black groupers.

Hat Caye Drop

Visibility - 50 feet, Currents - minimal...This is for the beginners who come to Hat Caye Drop, very close to Long Caye. Marine life is exceptional and unique - basket sponge, coral shrimp with white antennas, giant yellow tube sponges and deep-water lace coral. The lack of current at Hat Caye makes it an absolute favorite for the beginners.

Tres Cocos

To the east on Long Caye stood a trio of tall palm trees - and that's the origin of Tres Cocos. It is almost one mile from Hat Caye Drop and boasts of a diving visibility of 80 feet and 30 foot depth - minimal to medium currents.

What comes along with Tres Cocos is a feast for the eyes - coral shrimp, large spotted moray eels, lion's paw sea cucumbers, urchins, arrow crabs and sea feathers, parrotfish, damselfish, blue tang, jacks, large black groupers and turtles.

Long Caye Ridge...

To the west of Long Caye is hidden the perfect diving spot for beginners - depths of 40 feet, 80 feet of visibility and minimal currents. For those of you who are itching for marine photography, you have - soft coral, vase and tube sponges, yellow pencil corals and you will also see coral niches for spotted crabs, lobsters, filefish and arrow blennies. West Point I & II is also a great diving spot for beginners.

Que Brada...

Que Brada means "broken reef" - and its ½ mile north of Long Caye - 40 plus feet, 80 feet of visibility. The marine vista continues with schools of yellow tail snappers tailing divers on the reefs, large black groupers, ocean triggerfish, spotted eagle rays and turtles.

Cathedral Reef...

With mild undercurrent and 50 feet of visibility, Cathedral Reef is a great diving destination for intermediate divers.

Silver Caves, Nurse Shark Lodge, Eagle Ray Wall, Southwest Cut are other favorite destinations for beginner divers who travel to Long Caye.

The Aquarium...

To the northwest of Long Caye is the Aquarium - aptly named because of the multitude of marine flora and fauna that adorns the ridges and reef. The variety of invertebrates and exotic fauna at Aquarium is mesmerizing to say the least. The sheer brilliance of colored fish is dazzling for the divers.

Dive Away...

The unforgettable mosaic of marine life and clusters of natural diving platforms entices the novice as well as professional divers time and again to Long Caye at Lighthouse Reef.

Because of the spurt of activity in the Belize Real Estate segment, the environmental conservation has become one of the top most priorities for the government and Belize Property developers.

Dustin Hart is not a quintessential writer - rather he is a back-packer who lives off his ultra-light folding bike. If you understand a couple facts about your eardrum and about scuba diving, it's actually quite easy to avoid.

What is the Eardrum?

The eardrum (also known as the tympanic membrane) is the thin membrane that separates the outer and middle ear. This important structure serves two purposes: It prevents ear infections by serving as a barrier to block bacteria from entering the middle ear, and it also allows you to hear. When sound waves strike the ear drum, it vibrates and creates nerve impulses that travel to the brain, resulting in a hearing sensation.

As you can probably guess, the two main consequences of a ruptured eardrum are possible infection and temporary hearing loss.

How Does an Eardrum Rupture?

Although a ruptured eardrum can be caused by several things, including acoustic trauma, fluid buildup from ear infections, and direct damage from foreign objects, the main concern divers need to be aware of is barotrauma (pressure-induced injury).

The middle ear is an airspace, and all air spaces are affected by changes in pressure. Whenever the pressure outside an airspace is greater than the pressure inside, the outer pressure causes the airspace to compress, unless the imbalance is equalized.

Divers call this compression a squeeze. Another common situation in which you may have felt a squeeze in your ears is being on an airplane. If your ears have ever "popped," it's most likely because of a pressure imbalance.

A squeeze can range from uncomfortable to downright painful. You most likely encounter small changes in pressure everyday; however, you don't need to consciously equalize your ears because of a built-in equalization structure known as the Eustachian tube. This tube connects your middle ear to your throat. When air passes between the middle ear and your throat through this tube, the pressure in both air spaces is equalized. Yawning, chewing, swallowing, and wiggling your jaw can also help with this.

But if this built-in equalization mechanism is so handy, why do divers sometimes run into problems with their ears?

The problem is that the Eustachian tube is an airspace too, so it is subject to changes in pressure just like the ears. As the ambient pressure of the water increases, the tube is compressed or even sealed. Without an open air passage, the middle ear compresses, and the ear drum is sucked inward due to the vacuum effect. If ears aren't equalized and the vacuum effect continues to increase, the ear drum could rupture.

What Can You Do About It?

To avoid perforating your eardrum, you need to equalize your ears often during a dive (about every 5 to 10 vertical feet). You can't yawn, chew, swallow, or wiggle your jaw while you have a regulator in your mouth, but equalizing is still very easy!

Simply pinch your nostrils shut with two fingers while you gently blow through your nose. No air should escape from your nostrils, and you should feel a slight pressure or outward bulging in your ears. Make sure not to do this forcefully, though, or you'll risk blowing your eardrum anyway...exactly what you're trying to avoid!

What To Watch Out For

When you're diving, if you notice any pain, ear ringing or buzzing, or hearing loss, you should end the dive and see a doctor.

A ruptured eardrum takes about 2 to 3 months to heal. After that, you should check with an ear, nose, and throat specialist to see if it is safe to dive again. While your normal doctor would probably use an octoscope to examine your eardrum, the ENT specialist uses a binocular microscope that is capable of detecting much smaller perforations. This is important because higher pressure levels can cause water to jet through even a tiny perforation, so you need to be sure the eardrum is completely healed before you dive again.

If you follow the tips outlined above, you'll probably never have to worry about being sidelined by a ruptured eardrum. Take it slow and follow responsible diving protocols, and you'll enjoy plenty of fun, safe, injury-free diving!

Katie Plotner is the creator and editor of http://www.fun-and-safe-scuba-diving.com a site that specializes in providing new and inexperienced scuba divers with easily-accessible information on scuba diving safety, equipment, certification, and tips for fun diving. However, unlike sports such as tennis or baseball, scuba diving equipment not only allows you to perform better, it also keeps you safe and sound. When you choose to go scuba diving, you are taking a risk. While it is not one of the most dangerous sports out there, any time that you strap on an air tank and head several hundred feet below the surface, you are putting yourself in a bit of danger. Obviously, while under the water you are susceptible to any of the many creatures the live below the oceans surface.

This can include dangerous fish, eels and sharks. You also have to deal with sharp objects that may be below the surface such as coral or scraps of metal left over from ship wrecks. The biggest danger however is not being able to breathe properly under water or coming up to quickly and creating air bubbles in your lungs. Having the proper equipment and knowing how to use it can protect you from almost all of these things. As for the sharks, just keep your fingers crossed.

The first piece of equipment you will need is a wet suit. Wet suits are made of synthetic rubber and are lined with nylon fabric. A wet suit covers your entire body and will serve two purposes. Firstly, it will keep you warm when you are submerged in cold water, it does this by keeping the moisture away from your body, thus helping to regulate your core temperature. The next protection it will provide is against getting scraped or cut by something. If you brush up against coral, a wet suit will provide a barrier between your skin and the sharp object. Flippers are good to have to in order to swim easier.

The next piece of equipment is the most important. As scuba diving takes you down below the oceans surface for long periods of time, you will need to be able to breathe. The oxygen tank is therefore the most indispensable part of your gear. This tank is strapped to the divers back and pumps oxygen directly into your face and eye mask (which are obviously important as well). Depending on the length of your dive, you can get oxygen tanks with varying amounts of oxygen. You should always have a bit more than you need in case of emergencies.

Having the correct equipment will keep you safe and ensure that you have a great time exploring the depths of the ocean!

Sydney Garrison is an avid cyclist and sports enthusiast. The best scuba diving center is located at the Molokni crater which is about 20 minutes from the coast of Maui. This location has about 100 different species of fish and it is a great place for snorkeling too. This is often considered to be one of the best places for scuba diving in the world.
